The Gospel of the Three Little Pigs!

In an imaginary land and in a make believe time there was a wise mother pig who had three little pigs. All little pigs love to dance and play, and these piglets were no different. However, there came a time when Mama Pig knew her children must learn to take care of themselves, if they were going to survive the Big Bad Wolf. So, she kissed her kids and warned them of the crafty and evil big bad wolf. She said, “The wolf is more than a roar – He wants to eat you! Now be careful how you build your home.” So the little pigs set out to make their own way.

The first little pig was a little lazy.  He did not like to work at all.  He chose the easiest stuff to build his house.  He bummed straw from a neighbor, and quickly threw up a straw house.  As he built his home, he danced and played and sang, …

The second little pig was also a little lazy.  He loved to dance and play.  He met a neighbor who had sticks and asked him for the sticks.  He took the sticks and quickly made his home of sticks.  He also sang: Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf

The third little pig was very serious about his home, and he wanted it to last.  He did not want to take a chance with the big bad wolf.  So, he sought out a friend who had many bricks.  He told his friend about the wolf and about how he wanted to build a strong house with foundations for the future.  His buddy gave him the bricks, and the little pig began to build.  He sang his song and dance:

Then, out of nowhere, comes the hungry big bad wolf.  He drools for a little pig sandwich. 

The big, bad wolf went to the first little pig's house and knocked on the door. "Little pig, little pig, let me in," he said.

The little pig answered, "Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."

"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in," cried the wolf.

The first little pig's house of straw was not very well-built, so the wolf easily blew it down and the little pig ran to safety at the second little pig's house.

The wolf went to the second little pig's house and knocked on the door. "Little pig, little pig, let me in."

The little pig answers, "Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."

"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in," replies the wolf.

The second little pig's house of sticks was not very sturdy, so the wolf blew it down and the two little pigs ran to their brother's house.

The wolf went to the third little pig's house and knocked on the door. "Little pig, little pig, let me in."

The little pig answers, "Not by the hair on my chinny chin chin."

"Then I'll huff, and I'll puff, and I'll blow your house in," responds the wolf.

No matter how hard he tried, the wolf could not blow the brick house down! The wolf then tried to go down the chimney, but the three little pigs had a pan of boiling hot water. "Yeow!" cried the wolf.

Having outsmarted the big, bad wolf, the three little pigs begin to sing:

“Laying up in store a good foundation against the time to come “ 1 Timothy 6:19).

Are you a “wise little pig?” On what stuff do you place the highest value? Do you set store mostly on wealth? or on health? or on Character ? or on Pleasures? or on things like “straw” or “sticks?”  Give me your answer and I can soon tell you what kind of “little pig” you are!

Being a real Christian is the living out of a standard of absolute values. Every point of value is like that “brick.” It contradicts the world’s estimates of worth. The simple bits and pieces of life are valued lightly by most, and most of the most is temporal. The unseen things, love, faith, hope and prayer, alone are eternal. They are the “bricks” by which we build our life’s house.

The chief Brick is Christ, Himself.  Upon Him, we add the virtues of the Spirit of our Savior.  The end result is a house that will stand through every assault of the devil!

This house affords a good foundation for faith. But here there must be no jerry-building. Many things in our lives are like wood and straw, they will not last. However, we must build “against the time to come.” Our foundations must last on to maturity and to Death. Our life must be built upon the “rock”, which is Christ.  It must be built with Christian virtues, and cemented by Christian faith and love. Here lies our hope; and here our future wealth.
